Introduction to the
Internet
The Internet is an amazing development, with resources for all, including veterinarians. While the concept is still scary to some, the technology is really no more sophisticated that the telephone system. Most of us really don’t understand how we can make a telephone call across the globe and talk with someone like they were in the next room. The same is true from communicating via the Internet. It is simply a network of computer networks, connected internationally. Currently there are over 500 million users of the system.
A major difference between the Internet and the telephone system, and part of the reason for the mystique, is that the Internet is not a privately or publicly held company. Otherwise, we’d receive lots of promotional material on it, like we do for the networks to exploit its access, such as America Online (AOL) and the Microsoft Network (MSN). The Internet originated as ARPANET in the 1970s as a Department of Defense computer system. The National Science Foundation then created a network of supercomputer centers. As more and more computer networks (companies with multiple computers linked together) joined in, the Internet grew, and grew and grew. Currently there are over 20,000 networks now linked to the system. Some smart companies decided they could readily sell access to this free network by letting people link into their network via modem. By dressing up their systems with graphics and providing some bells and whistles, these companies have managed to sell a free service to millions of computer users who are happy to pay for the privilege.
Most veterinarians use the Internet to send electronic mail (e-mail) or to visit sites on the World Wide Web (WWW). However, many others are using the service to participate in forums, newsgroups, and to build their own billboards on the Web.
You don’t actually need a computer to access the Internet (Web TV will do), but that is how most veterinarians will use the service. There are now thousands of services available to sell Internet access (Internet Service Providers or ISPs), some local and some international. The one best for you depends on how you will be using the service.
